UPDATED | Damage Assessments, Cleanup, And Hiring Confront National Park Staff

A coyote that got a taste for human food from garbage strewn about Death Valley National Park during the partial government shutdown had to be put down by rangers after it repeatedly stopped traffic, while other coyotes and and two bobcats were seen approaching visitors in the park. Human visitors left other waste behind: an estimated half-ton of human waste on the landscape.

End Of Government Shutdown Praised By National Park Advocates

Word Friday that the partial government shutdown would be lifted for three weeks, if not longer, was welcomed by groups concerned about the state of the National Park System. But they also called on Congress to ensure a similar event never happens again.

Areas Of Death Valley Closed, Volunteers Collecting Trash At Saguaro National Park

Areas of Death Valley National Park were closed to the public Friday due to trash, human waste, unspecified vandalism, and resource damage. Down at Saguaro National Park, meanwhile, volunteers were turning out to pick up garbage.

Beautiful desert views. No crowds. What's not to like about camping in Death Valley National Park, especially when there are no rangers about to ticket you for camping illegally? Meanwhile, as the partial government shutdown continues to show the ugly side of keeping national parks open without adequate National Park Service staff, one Yosemite National Park ranger voiced concerns about managing crowds with a skeleton staff.
