Modern technology, including cell phones and helicopters, can be a mixed blessing when emergencies occur in remote locations in parks. The downside is some people will expect quick results when things go awry, and due to weather, terrain or other factors, cell phones don't always work, and helicopters aren't always available. When everything comes together, however, those modern devices can make a big difference for rescuers and victims alike.

Congress, which in December passed legislation that created a number of new national park units, is now being asked to expand by 75,000 acres the Mojave National Preserve as well as Death Valley and Joshua Tree national parks, while also being called upon to create two new national monuments.

Another scofflaw recently entered a guilty plea to illegal behavior in Yosemite National Park that he, too, showcased via Instragram, a form of self-promotion that provided investigators with the clues they needed to land a conviction.
