Hurricane Lane Prompts Haleakalā National Park Closure

Hurricane Lane was on course Wednesday to deliver a glancing blow, at least, to Hawaii, prompting Haleakalā National Park to close. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has been mostly closed for months due to volcanic activity from the Kīlauea Volcano.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park Recovering From Volcanic Activity

Although it’s been more than two weeks since the summit area of Kīlauea at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park was rocked by dangerous earthquakes and collapse-explosion events, the damage inflicted upon roads, trails and infrastructure across the park will take time to evaluate and repair.

Fires from Wyoming to Hawaii continue to rage in the National Park System, with thousands of firefighters battling flames that are sending billowing, choking clouds of smoke into some parks and limiting access in others. The Yosemite Valley, Wawona area, and Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias all remained closed in Yosemite National Park on Thursday.

There Is No Timeline For Reopening Most Of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

With no end in sight to the volcanism within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, there's no firm date for when most of the park will reopen. Earthquakes have cracked and broken roadways in the park, and damaged the infrastructure of the Jaggar Museum.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park's Chain of Craters-Kalapana Road Turning Into Evacuation Route

Work to reopen a road in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park that has been closed by lava flows for 41 of the 53 years it has existed is under way to create an evacuation route through the park should Highway 130 be overrun by lava from the ongoing Kīlauea Volcano eruption.
