Don't worry about national parks being overrun anytime soon by benches and bricks declaring that "This view is brought to you by.....," or by tobacco companies or alcohol manufacturers sponsoring any park facilities or trails.
National Park Service Director Fran Mainella has calmed many nerves by announcing that her Director's Order 21, which outlines commercial do's and don'ts in the parks, will take a fairly conservative approach in updating past practices.
Specifically, she told members of the House Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies, the revised order will ban direct donations from companies that make alcoholic beverages or tobacco products. Additionally, it will retain the past prohibition against turning NPS employees into fund-raisers.
As far as honoring future donors, the revised order that's expected by month's end will call for recognition "only through discreet plaques and donor boards, usually placed in visitor centers. Naming rooms and recognizing donors on bricks and benches will not be allowed."
That said, Director Mainella added that "there may be times when I waive (that restriction) on a particular case."
Overall, she assured the committee members, "We are not going to commercialize our parks."
