It was 78 years ago today that Acadia National Park, the first national park east of the Mississippi, officially came into being. Kind of.
I say "kind of" because Acadia started out as Sieur de Monts National Monument in July 1916 before more land was added to create Lafayette National Park in 1919. A decade later, on January 19, 1929, the park's name was changed to "Acadia" after a family with English heritage demanded the name change in return for donating 2,000 acres for the park on Schoodic Peninsula.
Acadia long has been one of my favorite parks, thanks to its mix of woody highlands and rocky sea coast.
