National Mall: Cherry Blossom Festival Not Far Off

Springtime must be right around the corner. Why else would the chief horticulturist for the National Park Service's National Capital Region be issuing his forecast for the peak color during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival?

According to Robert DeFeo, if you want to see the cherry trees at their blooming best, plan on being on the national mall between March 27th and April 3rd.

Mr. DeFeo says the range of blooming dates – or the best series of dates to see the beautiful cherry blossoms – is defined as the period in which 70 percent of the cherry blossoms are out and in bloom along the Tidal Basin, around the Washington Monument and on Hains Point.

The horticulturist's prediction means the National Cherry Blossom Festival itself will include some days of the best viewing of the cherry blossoms. There have been times in previous years when the range of blooming dates did not correspond with the festival. The 16-day-long 2008 festival runs from March 29th to April 13th.

I love the cherry blossom festival!! If you have never been to see the National Mall with the cherry blossoms in their peak, then you absolutely must go! Words can't describe how truly awesome it is. My husband and I go every year, it is that amazing.
