Ahhhh, here we are in early July and already the end of summer is in sight. And end-of-summer savings on lodgings in Grand Canyon National Park also are in sight.

How unusual is that? Has there ever been a summer that has offered so many rate reductions or lodging availabilities in the national parks?

The latest offer comes from Xanterra Parks & Resorts, which operates the lodges on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Their just-announced "End of Summer Package" dovetails neatly with this summer's third and final entrance-fee-free weekend in the National Park System.

The “End of Summer” package is available at Maswik Lodge and Yavapai Lodge. This package is based upon double occupancy and is available Aug. 15 – Sept. 10, 2009 and features accommodations, breakfast for two at Maswik Lodge or Yavapai Lodge, one motorcoach tour for two and discounts in Xanterra gift shops of up to 20 percent. The package prices represent a savings of up to 44 percent compared to purchasing the items separately.

“This is a terrific time to visit the Grand Canyon,” says Gordon Taylor, general manager of Xanterra South Rim, L.L.C. “We experience a slight slowdown in visitation beginning in late August as families prepare for the new school year and the empty nesters stay home for the Labor Day weekend.”

The rate at Maswik Lodge is $165 per night and features accommodations in a “Maswik North” room, breakfast for two, a Sunset or Hermits Rest tour in the morning or afternoon and a one-time gift shop discount good for 10 percent off purchases of $50-149.99 and 20 percent off purchases $150 and above.

The rate at Yavapai Lodge is $150 and features accommodations in a “Yavapai East” room , breakfast for two, a Sunset or Hermits Rest tour in the morning or afternoon and a one-time gift shop discount good for 10 percent off purchases of $50-149.99 and 20 percent off purchases $150 and above.

Rack rates for rooms are normally $170 per night at Maswik North and $153 at Yavapai East. Rates do not include taxes. This package is not available Sept. 5 and 6, 2009.

When reserving this package, guests need to use the promo code SUMMER online at www.grandcanyonlodges.com or call toll-free 1-888-297-2757 or 1-303-297-2757 from outside the United States.
