A Denver businessman has been chosen to take over as chief executive officer of the National Park Foundation, the congressionally chartered fund-raising arm for the National Park System.

Neil J. Mulholland takes over for Vin Cipolla, who stepped down earlier this year. Mr. Mulholland comes to the position with a background most recently built as a consultant to broadwire band companies and niche content providers. As CEO of the foundation, he will guide the overall direction of the organization and advance its strategic mission – to strengthen the connection between the American people and their national parks.

“Neil Mulholland brings vast experience and expertise to the foundation that will allow it to continue to be a strong partner with the National Park Service as we near the 100th anniversary of the National Park System in 2016,” said Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, who serves as chairman of the foundation’s board. “Together, we will ensure our National Park System continues to be the finest system of parks in the world.”

Mr. Mulholland, who will relocate to Washington, D.C., and begin work August 10, is the fifth person to hold the title of president of the National Park Foundation since the organization received its Congressional charter in 1967 at the urging of then First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, and celebrated philanthropist, Laurance Rockefeller.

"I am honored to have this opportunity to lead the National Park Foundation and work in such a meaningful way to unite the American public in appreciation, service and support of their national parks," he said in prepared comments. “With the September 27th debut of the Ken Burns series The National Parks, America’s Best Idea on PBS, and as we approach the national parks' centennial, I look forward to working in partnership with the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, park friends groups, and millions of Americans as we prepare for these historic milestones.”

Mr. Mulholland brings 28 years of professional experience from the private sector that includes working with Fortune 500 Companies. During his career he has worked to develop partnerships, raise investment capital, and engage local communities to create sustainable development.

"This is a transformative time for the work of the National Park Foundation and the perfect moment to welcome Neil as our president and CEO," said Mr. Cipolla, who has served as vice chair of the National Park Foundation Board of Directors since relinquishing the top job. “His extensive technology background, business expertise and passion for community building will bring forth bold new ideas and shape the Foundation as we continue to grow and strengthen the network of charitable support for our national parks."

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
