To step back into the seafaring past, if only for an hour, plan on attending one of the upcoming lightings of the Point Reyes National Seashore Lighthouse.
Throughout the year the seashore staff offers lighting tours on the first and third Saturdays of every month from mid-April through December. The times, naturally, vary depending on the sunset. That said, park staff usually begin the program a half-hour before sunset. For the rest of this year, the program is scheduled for October 3rd and 17th, November 7th and 21st, and December 5th and 19th.
Space, however, is limited on this popular program, with room for just eight. To reserve a spot, call 415-669-1534 after 10 a.m. the day of the tour for times and reservations. If you're lucky enough to land a spot, here are some tips from the seashore staff:
* Wear very warm clothes.
* Bring a flashlight.
* High winds will result in program cancellation.
* Meet at the Lighthouse Visitor Center.
