Congress has provided $800,000 for the National Park Service to have repairs and restoration done to the historic gun batteries in the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area, according to U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone.

The money, contained in the Interior appropriations bill, would cover work to repair concrete deterioration and rusted areas to three of the gun batteries, and also improve visitor access to the batteries, the congressman said, in a release.

The batteries date to 1890.

"These funds will repair three historic gun batteries at the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Park and will boost tourism by improving visitor access to these historic sites," the Democrat said. "It is important that projects like this continue to receive funding so we can ensure that New Jersey's rich history is preserved."
