Commemorative Quarter Places Old Faithful Geyser, Bison On a Quarter

Published Date

March 26, 2010

This coin, commemorating Yellowstone National Park, will be minted in June. U.S. Mint image.

It won't be long before you'll be able to hold both a bison and Old Faithful in the palm of your hand.

The continuing roll-out of commemorative quarters under the America the Beautiful Quarters Program includes a 25-cent piece that bears an image of a bison standing in front of a gushing Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park.

The program is designed to celebrate the nation’s legacy of conservation. The U.S. Mint will strike and issue a total of 56 new quarters, each featuring one national park or other federally protected area in each state, the District of Columbia, and American Territory.

The face of each coin will continue to feature the familiar image of George Washington.

The coins will be issued in the order the areas first came under federal protection. The first, honoring Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, will be released on April 19. The quarter featuring Yellowstone will be released sometime in June; the second of five to be released this year.

Also to be released in 2010 are quarters depicting Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Mt. Hood National Forest.

In addition to the coins for circulation, the Mint will produce collectible items including proof sets, silver proof sets, a five-ounce silver bullion coin, coin bags, and coin rolls for each quarter.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.

can't wait till 2032 because thats when we will have an new perament design for the quarter,i am sick of these cheap looking quarters.

Not so fast... 2032 would also be the 300th anniversary of Washington's birth, meaning there might be some special rotating designs issued for that occasion.

Yellowstone National Park doesn't deserve to don the American buffalo on their quarter; they are responsible for slaughtering and harassing thousands of wild bison to appease cattle interests. Yellowstone hazes, captures, kills and otherwise harms bison on a consistent basis. They are signatories to the infamous and extremely controversial Interagency Bison Management Plan. In 2008, Yellowstone National Park killed 1,400 buffalo; Montana and it's hunt killed two hundred more, making it the largest scale bison slaughter since the 1800's. They do not deserve to don the mighty bison! They should replace it with a cow. Learn more at http://www.buffalofieldcampaign.org and please help stop the slaughter of the buffalo!

I'm excited to to collect all of these. I have a cardboard book I got at Barnes & Noble to collect them all in. Apparently the dates changed though, because I bought the book in December but it showed that the first quarters were to already be out by now.

If you are interested, Yellowstone National Park Quarter event is on June 3rd at Yellowstone National Park at 10:30 MT. If you can't make it to the event, you can check out the live webcast at http://bit.ly/b2Oxmd. The webcast starts at 10:25 MT.
