After nearly four months of cutting decking and pounding nails, a new boardwalk through the colorful Biscuit Basin thermal area in Yellowstone National Park has reopened to the public.
The basin, which until Friday had been closed to the public this year, has gotten some much-needed maintenance work from the National Park Service and crews from the Youth Conservation Corps. The 14 weeks of work involved the removal of some asphalt, installation of a larger observation deck overlooking Wall Pool, and a new connection to the Mystic Falls trail. In all, more than 2,400 feet of trail was built or replaced, according to the Park Service.
The new boardwalk was designed and built for accessibility in accordance with the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided funding in the amount of $121,570 for project materials.
Biscuit Basin, located three miles north of Old Faithful, was named for the unusual biscuit-like deposits which once surrounded Sapphire Pool, one of several hydrothermal features in the basin.
