Sounds like an early cold blast is heading south from Canada, as Glacier National Park officials temporarily closed a portion of the Going-to-the-Sun Road on Friday morning due to snow.

The section of the Sun Road between Big Bend on the west side of Logan Pass and the Jackson Glacier Overlook on the east side was closed about 8 a.m. due to snow accumulation, park officials said. It was to be reopened when conditions allowed.

Meanwhile, Glacier officials want you to know that this is the last weekend of the year that you'll be able to drive the entire 50-mile length of the Sun Road, weather permitting. Starting Monday, the west side fall motor vehicle access will be restricted at Avalanche. Logan Pass, though, will remain accessible for motor vehicle traffic from the east side, weather permitting, until the pass is closed for the season to all vehicle traffic on Monday, October 18.

Hikers are advised that after this weekend (beginning September 20), no vehicles will be allowed to access the Loop or Packer’s Roost trailheads.
