Fee Increase Approved At Colorado National Monument

Beginning in May it will cost you a little bit more to enter Colorado National Monument.

Park officials say that as of May 2 it will cost you $10 per car, and $5 per pedestrian or cyclist, to enter the monument. Those new rates are up from $7 and $4, respectively.

The annual park pass that provides for unlimited entry into Colorado National Monument for one full year from the date of purchase will go from $20.00 to $ 25.00 per year.

These are the first increases in entrance fee rates in six years, according to monument officials.

Colorado National Monument currently has a limited supply of the $20.00 annual passes that will sell for $20.00 until they are sold out, even if purchased after May 2. The annual passes are available for sale at both entrance stations, at the park visitor center, and through the mail by calling 970-858-3617, ext 334.

The Saddlehorn Campground rate of $10.00 has not been raised in 20 years and will go to $20.00 per night beginning on May 2. Campers age 62 and older with Golden Age passports receive a 50 percent discount on campsite fees and will pay just $10.00 per night.

For comparison, the closest state and private campgrounds in Fruita, Colo., and Grand Junction, Colo., charge anywhere from $26.00 to $40.00 per night depending on size of camping unit. Arches National Park’s Devils Garden Campground charges $20.00 per night and is similar to the Saddlehorn Campground. The nightly rates at Mesa Verde National Park’s Morefield Campground begin at $23.00 per site.

Revenues from the entrance stations and the campground are used to improve infrastructure within the monument, including water and sewer systems, trails, and visitor facilities. Currently, fee revenue is being used to replace the 47-year-old exhibits in the visitor center, replace outdated wayside exhibits at 19 scenic overlooks along Historic Rim Rock Drive, replace aging water lines, restore a CCC constructed restroom, and add a new handicapped accessible restroom in the Saddlehorn Campground.
