Plan Now To Attend Junior Ranger Day At Cape Lookout National Seashore

Though National Junior Ranger Day is still just about a month off, that doesn't mean you can't start planning to attend the festivities at Cape Lookout National Seashore in celebration of junior rangers.

The seashore's acting superintendent, Mike Tranel, is inviting one and all to stop by the Harkers Island Visitor Center at Cape Lookout on April 17 to celebrate Junior Ranger Day and National Park Week. (Scouts, home-school groups and other organizations are asked to call ahead to help park staff plan for their groups, however.)

The following activities are planned at the seashore on April 17:

* Kite Flying, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. The ever-present wind of Cape Lookout is a great place to enjoy flying kites. Bring a kite from home or create a new one with rangers.

* Bells and Whistles, 11:00 a.m. –- 12:30 p.m. Get an inside look at the boats and vehicles used by law enforcement rangers.

* Ranger Tales, 12:30 p.m. -- 1 p.m. Listen to exciting stories about park rangers and dress up in various park employee uniforms.

* Shells and Bones, 1:00 p.m. –- 2 p.m. Discover the identity of the some curious items found along the seashore's beaches.

* Surf Rescue Drills, 2:00 p.m. -- 3 p.m. Experience the thrill of being in the historic Life-Saving Service by learning some Surf Rescue Drills.

* Soundside Hike & Scavenger Hunt, 3:00 p.m. -– 4:00 p.m. Eggs can be found anywhere. See how many you can find on a ranger-led nature hike.

* Junior Ranger Adventures, all day. Hands-on activities are a great way to explore Cape Lookout National Seashore.

* Seaside Treasure ID,all day. Found it on the beach but don't know what it is? Bring it to the rangers: they'll help you discover its identity.

* Seaside Crafts, all day. Nature provides supplies to make fun and challenging crafts to take home.

* Ranger Photo Op, all day. Ever want to be a ranger? Put your face on the body and get your picture taken.

* Cast and Catch, all day. Practice your aim while casting for plastic fish.
