Monocacy National Battlefield Releases iPad App

There's an iPad app out that schools you on the details of the Civil War battle at Monocacy, Maryland.

You can add Monocacy National Battlefield in Maryland to the number of places that can proclaim, "There's an app for that!"

Tom Gwaltney, the park's archaeologist, produced the iPad app that can serve as a portable reference to the Civil War battle that occurred at Monocacy Junction, just south of Frederick, Maryland, on July 9, 1864. There, a small Union force delayed a larger Confederate army and helped prevent the capture of Washington, D.C.

The app delves into the the soldiers who fought in the battle, the civilians who developed the land and lived here, and the landscape that makes up the battlefield.

Among the app's features:

* Details of the battle and the soldiers who fought in the battle;

* A tour of the historic farmsteads that make up the battlefield;

* The history of the civilians who lived there;

* Ongoing research into the varied landscape from prehistory to the present;

* A calendar of events that will be regularly updated;

* A quiz to test your knowledge.

Great app! Very easy to use and visually appealing - I haven't seen very many national parks that have something like this.  This looks like a pretty interesting place with a lot more history than just the Civil War part.
