If you live in south Florida, or are visiting the area this week, you might want to make plans to join the 12th Annual March for Parks to Biscayne National Park on Saturday.
The day-long event is sponsored by the South Florida Community Partners, the National Park Service, and the National Parks Conservation Association. The agenda calls for the "march" to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the park headquarters in Homestead. The hope is that it will attract families from the Miami area who have never experienced Biscayne.
March for Parks seeks is to expose African-American, Hispanic, and Haitian communities to their local national parks in an effort to ensure national parks remain relevant to present and future generations.
Each year, America’s national parks attract millions of visitors from around the world. Few of these visitors, however, represent our nation’s diverse communities. Community groups, such as South Florida Community Partners, historically the volunteer organizers of March for Parks, are working with partner groups to change that.
