Booker T. Washington National Monument will be offering an “Old Virginia Christmas of 1862” program in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

The program, scheduled for December 1, will include lantern-guided, costumed programs designed to allow visitors to experience an 1862 Virginia Christmas.

Programs at the monument are scheduled for 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m. Light refreshments are to be offered and entertainment will be provided by Tina Liza Jones & the Flying Cowboys.

Booker T. Washington National Monument preserves a portion of the former tobacco plantation that served as the birthplace and nine-year childhood home of the well-known educator, orator, author, and advisor who was a guiding force at Alabama’s Tuskegee Institute.

The monument includes reconstructed 19th-century farm buildings, trails, farm animals, and a subsistence garden reminiscent of this region of Virginia in the 1850s. The 240-acre park welcomes between 20,000 and 25,000 visitors annually.
