Like to backpack? Then you might consider entering the 3rd annual Hike Big challenge at Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks this summer.
The Sequoia Natural History Association is hosting the backpacking contest, which is open to the public and will offer backpackers the opportunity to tell the story of their experiences, while inspiring others to create their own park memories. In its third year, Hike Big has proven to be a moving event for its participants.
"I hope our experiences in the Hike Big program will inspire others to explore the park in new ways, whether by an extended day hike or an excursion into the backcountry. I would also encourage anyone to enroll in any of EdVenture programs provided by SNHA. The instructors are very knowledgeable and friendly, and you're guaranteed to meet great people with the same interests. If it weren't for the SNHA, I wouldn't have started backpacking at all." – 2011 Hike Big Participant
Hike Big is a backpacking challenge, run by SNHA’s outdoor educational division, the Sequoia Field Institute. Hike Big gives backpackers the chance to share the story of their trip expectations, life beforehand, and the story of their backcountry experience afterwards.
Three winners will be chosen. They will receive free gear (such as hiking books, maps, and clothing) from the Sequoia Natural History Association, a park entrance pass, free SNHA membership, and an incredible adventure in a beautiful area. The experiences of those who take on the challenge will be shared on the association's Facebook page, website, newsletters and publications.
Registration forms are available on the association's website. Entries must be received before May 24, 2013. The backpack trip must be completed between June 14, 2013 and September 6, 2013, and the minimum of 20-mile route must be completed within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park boundaries.
