A crack in the Blue Ridge Parkway has led officials to close a 21-mile stretch of the scenic parkway in North Carolina until they can more closely assess the stability of the road.
A notice on the Parkway's website said the road is "closed from MP 376 at Ox Creek Road to MP 355 at Mount Mitchell State Park. There is some evidence of structural damage near milepost 374.5 and the motor road will be closed until further notice."
Parkway officials were not immediately available Monday to discuss the matter, but other media reports cited a 2-to-4-inch crack in the pavement that ran about 100 feet and to a depth of 6 feet as the problem.
