Climber's Fall, Heart Attack Kill Two Olympic National Park Visitors

Two visitors to Olympic National Park died Saturday, one killed by a fall while climbing, the other by an apparent heart attack, according to park officials.

Richard “Grey” Liston, a 28-year-old Portland, Oregon, man, died early Saturday in a fall on Mount Olympus, the park reported. Park officials were alerted at 7:45 a.m. Saturday of the fall. "A short time later, park staff received word that other climbers, including a paramedic, had reached the injured party and confirmed that he was deceased," the park reported.

Mr. Liston was climbing on the east face of the summit peak of Mount Olympus with one companion at the time of his fall.

In the other incident, Philip Q. Ramirez, a 53-year old Renton, Washington, man, suffered an apparent heart attack Saturday evening while fishing on the beach at Kalaloch, the park added.

Park staff responded and provided CPR and emergency medical care, but Mr. Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 7:30 p.m. by paramedics from Forks and Seattle Life Flight.
