The annual Perseid Meteor showers are coming up next month, and the Mojave Desert Land Trust is throwing a party to watch the star show.

The party is set for August 10th, a Saturday, at the Integratron in Landers, California. The event is a benefit for the Land Trust and will run from 7 p.m. until midnight. Overnight camping at the Integratron is available.

The Perseids are considered by many to be the best meteor shower of the year, sometimes peaking at 50 per hour. Attendees can expect a great night for meteor-watching, plus the Southern California Desert Video Astronomers will project spectacular live images from their deep-space telescopes onto the side of the Integratron building, using a state-of-the-art projection system. These images will provide a peek at galaxies and stars well beyond our visual spectrum.

A ranger from Joshua Tree National Park will deliver a fun and educational program on the desert's famous night skies. Additionally, guests will enjoy beautiful, ambient live music performed by Clive Wright, a delectable dessert and coffee bar, out of this world raffle prizes, and the Integratron’s signature experience – a Sound Bath in the acoustically perfect sound chamber.

Many individuals and businesses have generously donated to the raffle and dessert bar for this year's event. For a complete list of sponsors please visit this site.

The Integratron is an icon to the Space Age and a perfect venue for star and meteor gazing. Its dome structure was built in the 1950s by aerospace engineer George Van Tassel, who claimed that extraterrestrials guided him in creating the unique architecture. The Integratron’s Sound Bath is performed inside this great wooden dome and includes the sonic sensation of 14 quartz crystal bowls, each in a different key.

Admission prices are $40 per person for current Mojave Desert Land Trust members and $60 for non-members (includes an MDLT membership). Kids 12 and under are free. Overnight camping is an additional $30 per person and includes a continental breakfast.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The event typically sells out quicky, so reserve your spot(s) early by registering at www.mojavedesertlandtrust.org or calling 760-366-5440. A portion of the admission price is tax-deductible as a donation to MDLT. The event benefits the Mojave Desert Land Trust’s efforts to preserve desert wilderness and beautiful night skies.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
