Mudslide Buries Parts Of Stehekin At North Cascades National Park

A mudslide swept through parts of Stehekin at North Cascades National Park, leaving a messy cleanup this weekend. NPS photos.

They've been shoveling mud this weekend at Stehekin in North Cascades National Park, where a potent storm spawned a mudslide that inundated parts of the lake-side community.

The storm struck Thursday night and unleashed a wall of rocks and mud that buried many of the vehicles parked in the long-term parking area and at the mouth of Imus Creek, according to park officials.

"Businesses affected were Discovery Bikes and Stehekin Reservations and Fly Fishing Shop. Most of the bicycles were damaged or washed into Lake Chelan and the log cabin office for fly fishing and reservations was surrounded by mud and rocks," reported Ken Hires, the Stehekin District interpretive ranger.

"An historic NPS storage shed at the Imus Cabin was filled with water and mud, the storage shed at the Lake House was damaged, and mud encroached on the public laundry building. Gas is currently turned off to that area to reduce the potential for fire. There were no injuries," he added.

National park employees, assisted by local residents, have been working to clear the road for shuttle service and the public. Assessment of the work needed to recover the damaged vehicles and to stabilize the slide debris is currently underway.

Bicycle rentals have been temporarily suspended, and shuttle buses are operating as passage through the site is allowed. NPS boats have been shuttling people around the slide area to ensure pedestrian safety. The Imus Trail is closed to public use pending a safety assessment, trail repair and bridge replacement.

The North Cascades Highway (SR 20) and Chinook Pass (SR 410) into Mount Rainier from the east remain closed due to mudslides from the same storm:

It was one heck of a rainstorm. The local news out of Seattle's had some pretty impressive footage of the results.
