Hunting Season At Big Cypress Preserve Extended Due To Government Shutdown

To offset hunting days lost in Big Cypress National Preserve due to the closure of the National Park System, the National Park Service and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have agreed to extend the hunting seasons in the preserve.

The government shutdown inadvertently lopped five to six days off the hunting seasons in the preserve as it was closed. After consultation with the NPS, the FWC has issued an executive order that will extend the archery and muzzleloading gun hunts in the preserve's wildlife management area.

The order, issued Friday, Oct. 18, will add an additional six days of archery hunting and five days of muzzleloading gun hunting. The archery hunt will run from Oct. 31 through Nov. 5. in all units of the wildlife management area. The muzzeloading gun hunt will run from Nov. 6 through Nov. 10 in all units except Deep Lake. There is no quota for either of these extended hunt seasons.

The current muzzleloading gun season will continue as scheduled, ending on Oct. 27.

The shutdown, from Oct. 1-16, reduced the archery season by six days and the muzzleloading season by five days.
