A young humpback whale came ashore at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on Wednesday and died overnight, according to seashore officials.
The whale, nearly 30 feet long, was spotted on the beach by a pedestrian about a mile south of Ramp 30.
“It washed up yesterday morning. Usually when that happens there’s something tragically wrong with them," seashore spokeswoman Cyndy Holda said Thursday. "It was alive when it washed up, but it expired during the night. There are staff out there now. They’ll do a necropsy on it."
This is the time of year that humpback whales migrate down the Atlantic coastline from waters off New England towards the Caribbean.
