The year-end holidays will bring some closures to the national parks in North Dakota.

The visitor centers at Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site will be closed on Christmas Day, December 25, and on January 1, 2014, for the New Year’s Day holiday. Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site will be closed in its entirety on December 25 and on January 1.

All facilities will reopen for regular business hours on December 26 and January 2, respectively.

“We encourage visitors to enjoy their national parks in winter,” said Superintendent Valerie Naylor of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. “Winter provides a quiet and serene backdrop for solitude, beautiful photo opportunities and outstanding wildlife viewing.”

Theodore Roosevelt National Park will be open for visitors to enjoy hiking, wildlife watching, and other outdoor activities, and primitive camping is available in the park’s North and South Units. The scenic drives in both units will also be open as weather and road conditions permit.

The trails and grounds at Knife River Indians Villages will be open on the holidays so that visitors can enjoy spending time outdoors.
