Blue Ridge Parkway About Ready For Spring Opening

Share

Published Date

March 24, 2014

Barring a spring storm, facilities along the 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway will begin opening for the high season on April 1, with most facilities open by June 1.

The current schedule for open facilities calls for most areas to be fully operational by May 9, although the Smart View Picnic Area might not open before June 14.

“We are very happy to restore services at a number of facilities this season. We recognize how important these areas are to local communities and the traveling public," said Parkway Superintendent Mark Woods. "The Parkway is an important resource for many reasons for many people. Restoring services at these facilities is an honor for us.”

Preparations are underway now to bring water systems back on line, plan a schedule of engaging interpretive programs, clear debris from overlooks and campgrounds, hire seasonal staff in a number of operational areas, and much more across the 469-mile region.

From backcountry trails and camping, to favorite picnic areas and full-service concession operations, the Parkway offers visitors a wealth of opportunities to experience the scenic beauty and natural and cultural heritage of the southern Appalachian region.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
