Zion National Park Records Second Base Jumping Fatality This Year

For the second time this year, a thrill-seeker has died at Zion National Park as the result of a BASE-jumping attempt that went awry.

Park officials said Monday that they were alerted early Sunday morning that a BASE jumper was overdue in the vicinity of the West Temple.

"The Grand Canyon National Park helicopter crew was called in to assist with the search. They located a body, believed to be the missing BASE jumper, just before 3 p.m.," the park's release said. "The body is located in difficult terrain and in an area where crosswinds limit the use of a helicopter. Search and Rescue crews will assess options for recovery today. The team hopes to be able to recover the body over the next few days."

The victim's identity was not immediately released.

BASE jumping is illegal within Zion National Park for resource protection and safety reasons. 

Back in February a 28-year-old Utah woman fell an estimated 2,000 feet to her death when her parachute failed to open properly after she jumped off Mount Kinesava.
