Not a lot of people think of camping at Biscayne National Park in the summer months because of the heat and bugs. But if you do go, campsites on Boca Chita Key and Elliott Key will be free for the taking during the summer.
The park waives docking and camping fees annually from May 1 through September 30. During this time there is insufficient revenue to support the cost of collecting and processing fees, the agency says.
"Generally, from mid-April through November, winds are light and insect populations are thick. The most substantial insect populations occur from May through August," a park release noted. "Regular fees of $20 for overnight boat docking and a campsite, or $15 per night for only a campsite, are enforced annually from September 1 through April 30."
The campgrounds may be reached only by boat. The Elliott Key campground and marina reopened in mid-April, 2014.
