Akamina Parkway In Waterton Lakes National Park Is Now Open

With the reopening of the Akamina Parkway, paddlers can once again ply the waters of Cameron Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park/Kurt Repanshek

The Akamina Parkway, a 9-mile-long scenic route that leads to Cameron Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada, has been reopened to traffic following a construction project.

Cameron Lake is popular for canoeing or paddle boating, or simply appreciating the subalpine scenery along a short forest walk. The opening of the road also means hikers have regained access to some of the most popular trails in the park, from the short walk to Crandell Lake to a full day trek on the Carthew-Alderson trail.

'œWe are pleased that construction on this particularly challenging part of the road is completed in time for the summer season. We welcome visitors to enjoy the Akamina Parkway and invite them to re-connect with this incredible area of Waterton Lakes National Park,' said Ifan Thomas, Park Canada's Field Unit superintendent for Waterton Lakes.

The Akamina Parkway sustained extensive damage during the June 2013 floods and was required to be closed for repairs. The Akamina Parkway partially reopened in November 2013 to provide visitor access for winter recreation. The Akamina Parkway was re-closed from April 25 to May 31 so final work to repair the road could be completed in time for the busy summer visitor season.
