A smoking ban is coming to Cape Cod National Seashore beaches this summer/NPS

In a move to minimize second-hand smoke problems and to help keep beaches cleaner, smoking bans are coming to guarded beaches at Cape Cod National Seashore.

Cape Cod Superintendent George Price says smoking will be prohibited beginning June 19 at all six guarded beaches at the national seashore.

"The smoking prohibition is the result of a number of complaints from visitors who have been affected by second hand smoke on the guarded beaches. Visitors expressed that their ability to enjoy the beach experience was impacted," a release from the seashore said. "Visitors who wish to smoke will be allowed to do so outside of the guarded beach area. Smokers are also asked to remove any smoking remnants with them as trash."

The smoking ban at Cape Cod is "consistent with a number of town beaches on Cape Cod and at other national parks, such as Fire Island National Seashore," the release added.
