Catch the full moon at Cape Hatteras National Seashore next week/NPS

Add Cape Hatteras National Seashore to the parks planning to take advantage of next week's full moon. If all goes well, you can climb either the Cape Hattteras or Bodie Island lighthouses on Wednesday.

Tickets for this evening full moon event must be obtained in advance, so if you're coming from afar this might not work. For those who can work it into their schedules, tickets can be obtained at each lighthouse beginning Monday. The tickets, which are limited in number, are $8 for adults and $4 for kids 11 and under or seniors 62 and older. Ticket sales at Cape Hatteras Light will be offered from 8:15 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. daily, and at Bodie Island Light from 8:30 a.m. to 5:40 p.m.

As part of the tour, you'll "hear stories of keepers of old, view the working light close up in the lantern room, and catch the reflection off the Atlantic Ocean of the newly-risen full moon as you stand on the lighthouse balcony."

Two tours will be given at each lighthouse; one at 7 p.m. and a second at 8 p.m.

Children joining the climb must be at least 42 inches tall and must climb the steps on their own'”they cannot be carried. Also, keep in mind that some youngsters may not enjoy the dimly lit, sometimes claustrophobic environment. Children 11 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult (16 or older).

Prior to purchasing tickets, consider your own limitations and those of your group. The lighthouse is tall, dark, often hot and humid, and can be a challenge to climb. There is no air conditioning or internal lights.
