Yes, there's an app for Yellowstone's geysers./NPS

Predicting the eruption of geysers in Yellowstone National Park can be a tricky thing, but now you can load an app on your smartphone that will provide the estimated time of eruption for Old Faithful and five other fairly predictable geysers in the park.

Now, the app -- NPS Geysers -- carries a little leeway with its predictions. After all, the geysers can be tardy with their eruptions. So, when it comes to Old Faithful, the app tells the predicted time of eruption, and tags on a +/- 10 minutes. For Grand Geyser, there's a little more leeway: +/- 90 minutes. And if you don't have a cell signal, well, no prediction.

The app also features a webcam feed focused on Old Faithful, carries Twitter, flickr, and YouTube feeds so you can stay hooked into the latest needs and chit-chat from the park and its followers, and admire gorgeous photos posted by Yellowstone fans. There's even an FAQ section that contains answers to such questions as how Old Faithful predictions calculated, how are other geysers' eruptions predicted, and why do geysers erupt?

The app also provides some safety information, and a short mention of how unpredictable the weather can be in the park.

The app, which was produced by a collaboration of talent from Washington State University, the University of Hawaii, the National Park Service, the Montana Banana -- Web & Mobile Development, and Pixelcaster,  was made possible in part by a donation from Canon USA through the Yellowstone Park Foundation.

It can be downloaded free from Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Oh, and what geysers, besides Old Faithful and Grand, are predictions offered for? Riverside, Castle, Great Fountain, and Daisy.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
