The northeastern corner of Oak Island, including Campsite 6, has been closed at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore due to bear activity/NPS
A black bear that has been hanging out in the northeastern end of Oak Island at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin has led to a temporary closure of the area.
Affected by the closure order is Campsite 6 in Zone 1.
"One resident bear is frequenting the area and has exhibited behavior that indicates it is not afraid of humans. To the knowledge of park rangers, this bear has not gotten human food - yet," a park release said. "The help of visitors is needed to make sure that no food is left unattended and any bear activity is reported immediately to park headquarters at 715-779-3398, ext. 122.
The closure will be re-evaluated at least weekly. As soon as it appears the bear will stay away from visitor use areas, the closed portion of the island will be reopened.
