More and more moonlight tours are showing up around the National Park System. One of the upcoming tours is at Fort Laramie National Historic Site in Wyoming, where a moonlight tour is scheduled for August 8.
Traditionally, the “Moonlight Tour” is one of the historic site’s most popular summer events. This year’s format will be slightly different than in the past. The event will be held at one location, just north of the Visitor Center.
During this special program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., visitors will encounter characters associated with the rich history of Fort Laramie. Marla Matkin will headline this year’s event with her presentation entitled, “Famous Faces of Fort Laramie.” Visitors will enjoy short vignettes depicting life at Fort Laramie in the 19th century. The evening’s entertainment will then conclude with Hank Cramer’s hour-long concert and program on the history of music sung by emigrants on the overland trails.
The park encourages visitors to bring a flashlight and mosquito repellent. Seating will be available, but if you have a favorite lawn chair or blanket, you are more than welcome to bring it.
In addition to the Moonlight Tour, emigrant and soldier reenactors will be present in their encampments throughout the weekend during daylight hours. Living history demonstrations and presentations will be ongoing from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 8 and from 9:30 a.m. until noon on Sunday, August 9. These events are free and open to the public.
