Helicopter dumps water on Reynolds Creek Fire in Glacier National Park/NPS

Seven helicopters were aiding ground crews in battling the Reynolds Creek Fire in Glacier National Park/NPS

Nearly 600 firefighters were battling the Reynolds Creek Fire in Glacier National Park on Sunday, with some progress being made. However, the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the eastern side of the park remained closed, as did some visitor facilities.

Among the 570 firefighters assigned to the fire were four Interagency "hotshot" crews and four 20-person hand crews. Air support was being provided by seven helicopters.

The fire, which had been reduced in size from 4,000 acres to 3,158 acres through more accurate mapping, was burning along the north shore of St. Mary Lake in rocky, rugged terrain and burning in timber, brush, and grass. Recent rains have subdued the fire, but it still possessed potential for activity when drier weather conditions return, a park release said Sunday.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road remained closed from just beyond the St. Mary Visitor Center to the Big Bend on the west side of the Divide, a distance of 18 miles. The St. Mary Visitor Center, St. Mary Campground, the Rising Sun Motor Inn, the Rising Sun Campground and Logan Pass also remained closed. Any reports of the St. Mary Visitor Center reopening on Monday were in error.

The Sperry Trail is open from Lake McDonald Lodge to Gunsight Pass. Travel beyond the pass is closed due to the fire. Lake Ellen Wilson Backcountry site is now reopened.

Evacuation orders have been lifted for National Park Service employee housing and administrative areas.
