Much has been made of the recent decision by Yellowstone National Park officials to put down a grizzly bear that was tied to the fatal mauling and partial consumption of a hiker. Is there a way you can perhaps help another bear from being put down? Perhaps, by donating to efforts to see bear-proof boxes installed at camgrounds throughout the park.
These steel boxes keep human foods out of the reach of bears, and so play a role in preventing bears from connecting humans with foods. The Yellowstone Park Foundation has a campaign to install these boxes in park campgrounds. They're not cheap, at $1,500 each, and the campaign has an annual budget of $82,500.
Currently, the Foundation estimates that more than 1,200 campsites still need a box. Your donation, which is tax deductible, can be made at this site.
