Buzzard Point Marina On Anacostia River To Close Permanently

The National Park Service will explore opportunities to enhance public access to the Anacostia River in the District of Columbia after Anacostia Park's Buzzard Point Marina closes on December 31, the expiration of the concession contract.

Park Service condition and financial feasibility assessments determined that the level of investment required to modernize the facility to meet today's boating needs does not allow for a financially viable business while providing safe and effective visitor services.

"Closing the marina is not a decision that was made lightly," park Superintendent Gopaul Noojibail said. "The National Park Service is committed to providing great recreational opportunities on the Anacostia River, and we will work with the community to explore future possibilities with a goal of fun, educational and safe river access for neighbors and visitors alike."

Buzzard Point Boatyard Corporation has operated the marina as an NPS concessioner for more than 50 years. It once earned "Clean Marina" status for environmentally friendly practices, and served marina patrons and visitors well.

The NPS and Buzzard Point Boatyard Corporation have notified the 58 marina boat owners of the December 31 deadline for removing all boats, trailers and personal property. The NPS will remove the docks, upgrade the boat ramp, maintain the park and work with the community to determine the future of the area.
