A Montana man climbing Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park was killed in an apparent fall down the east side of the mountain.

Park officials on Sunday identified the man as Spencer Veysey, 26, of Missoula. He had been reported overdue Friday evening at 10:30 p.m. According to a park release, he had planned to summit the iconic, 14,259-foot peak, though they weren't sure which route he had taken.

On Saturday, rangers searched areas of the Keyhole Route as well as near Chasm Lake. They encountered icy conditions during search efforts. Late Saturday afternoon rangers found Veysey’s body at the bottom of Lambs Slide, a popular route with climbers that rises at a 45-degree angle on the east face of Longs Peak, the release said.

Rangers stayed at the Chasm Shelter, near his body overnight, and Sunday morning it was flown by helicopter to a landing site at Upper Beaver Meadows at approximately 11:30 a.m. and transferred to the Boulder County Coroner.
