Editor's note: The following is an unedited release from the National Park Service.

Redwood National and State Parks Superintendent Stephen Prokop and Brett Silver announced Friday that the four-mile Rellim Ridge Trail between Howland Hill Road and Hamilton Road is now open to bicycle use.

“We’re pleased to offer a new opportunity to promote active recreation in the redwoods,” Prokop said. “There was a lot of enthusiasm from locals for bike use on this trail.”

Local residents noted that their out-of-town family and friends would be excited to ride in the parks. Bicyclists now have the opportunity to connect Howland Hill Road in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park with Hamilton Road in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.

At Hamilton Road, cyclists can access additional bike routes in the Mill Creek Watershed. Maps of bicycle trails are available in park visitor centers. The Mill Creek Horse Trail crosses the Rellim Ridge Trail. Bikes will not be allowed on the Mill Creek Horse Trail.

The parks have posted signs showing which trails are open only to hikers and horses and which trails are also open to bikes.

Elk Valley Rancheria Chairman Dale Miller offered support for bike use on the trail, which is adjacent to the Rancheria.

“The Tribe believes that outdoor recreation opportunities are vitally important to the economic and physical health of the community. As our local economy relies heavily on tourists seeking the beauty of the redwoods and the Pacific Ocean, outdoor opportunities are central to drawing tourists to the community to engage in the many activities this area has to offer,” he said.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
