A series of listening sessions has been to scheduled to discuss the future of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument/George Wuerthner

A series of listening sessions is coming up for the public to discuss their thoughts for the future of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, which was created in Maine last month after a donation of 87,500 acres was made to the federal government.

A Park Service release said the goals of these sessions are to learn more about the diverse perspectives and ideas that the communities surrounding the monument and larger public have for the monument's future, and begin to identify the opportunities and topics that will inform additional public discussions for the management plan going forward.

The listening session schedule currently includes:

* Katahdin Middle/High School, Staceyville, September 15, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

* Medway Middle School, Medway, September 20, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

* Stearns High School, Millinocket, September 22, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

* Orono/Bangor, Location TBD, September 29, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

These sessions are the first in a series of public meetings and discussions that will take place for the management plan process.  The National Park Service has committed to completing the management plan in three years.  Management plans for new monuments establish the overarching vision for the public lands and guide the direction of future work and activities.

For more information or questions, please contact [email protected] or 207-456-6001. Updates and additional details of future public engagement activities will also be available at the monument’s website:  www.nps.gov/kaww
