Monocacy National Battlefield in Maryland announced that a partnership agreement has been signed with the newly-formed Monocacy National Battlefield Foundation, which will assist the park with fundraising, recruitment, and as a community advocate.
“Whether addressing park needs, being a voice in our community, or in creating future park stewards, the work of a Friends group is invaluable,” Superintendent Chris Stubbs said in a release.
Foundation president Jim Hubbard concurred: “The Monocacy National Battlefield Foundation is pleased to begin our support for this national park, which has a number of unfunded projects which, if completed, will enhance the experiences of our visitors,” he said. “The signatures on this agreement represent the beginning of a new era of cooperation and public service to this important part of our nation’s Civil War history.”
Initially established as a National Military Park in 1934, Monocacy National Battlefield commemorates the “Battle That Saved Washington,” fought on July 9, 1864. Although this battle was a military victory for the Confederates, it gave the Union enough time to reinforce Washington, D.C. The national battlefield consists of six historic properties covering over 1,600 acres.
