Flooding and rock slides spurred by a building winter storm led to closure of the Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park on Saturday/NPS, M. Theune
Rock slides and flooding forced closure of the Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park in California on Saturday, and with the worst of a winter storm yet to come there was no estimate of when the popular road would reopen.
Park officials announced Saturday evening that the road was closed at the Foothills Visitor Center.
Visitors will not be able to access the giant sequoias, Potwisha Campground, Giant Forest Museum, and Lodgepole areas, a park release said. The release did not say whether the Wuksachi Lodge would remain open through the weekend, and personnel there could not immediately be reached.
Visitors were able to exit the park Saturday evening, and Kings Canyon National Park remained open.
