An Accessible Fishing Pier Has Been Opened At Cape Lookout National Seashore

An accessible pier makes it easy for folks with disabilities to fish at Cape Lookout National Seashore/NPS

An accessible fishing pier has opened at Cape Lookout National Seashore in North Carolina that is intended to allow persons with disabilities and all users the opportunity to safely take in the beautiful view of Core Sound or fish.

The new fishing pier is located next to the Harkers Island Visitor Center. The pier is a short distance from the main parking area; just take the concrete sidewalk that leads you around to the sound side shoreline over to the rock jetty.

You can also take a hike on the improved Soundside Nature Trail located behind the visitor center that has been retreaded with crushed rock. The refurbished trail is gently raised so that it drains well. The path is also smoother, making it easier to maneuver baby strollers and wheelchairs. The .8 mile trail traverses along the Core Sound and a saltwater marsh as it winds through a maritime forest.

“We’re excited to improve access for all of our visitors at Cape Lookout,” said Mike Gauthier, acting superintendent. “We also want to recognize the DOT Construction and our National Park Service maintenance team who did an excellent job putting this project together so quickly and efficiently with the best interest of the public in mind.”
