Shiloh National Military Park in Tennessee will commemorate the 155th anniversary of the battle by offering a variety of hikes and interpretive programs from Wednesday to Sunday, April 5-9.
The hikes will culminate with a battlefield illumination on Saturday evening, April 8. Almost 24,000 luminaries will be placed on the battlefield representing the total casualties suffered in the Battle of Shiloh.
“2017 is the 155th anniversary of several historic events in the area, including the Battle of Shiloh, the Siege of Corinth, and the October Battles of Corinth and Davis Bridge. We invite everyone to join us in a yearlong commemoration of these and other important Civil War actions," said Superintendent Dale Wilkerson. "The Shiloh battle anniversary activities will be our first signature event for 2017, and we invite everyone to come out to the park and remember the epic battle and the Americans who fought here in 1862."
Volunteers and rangers will lead hikes and car caravan tours on a variety of subjects, from general battle overviews to actions at specific locations. Some of the tours have limited space, so the park asks that interested individuals pre-register for hikes and tours by calling the Shiloh visitor center at 731-689-5696.
A complete schedule of tours is posted on the park website.
Registered participants should meet the guides at the appointed sites and times, and are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather and terrain, and bring food and water. Insect repellent and sunscreen are also recommended.
The park's “Flames of Remembrance” battlefield illumination will take place Saturday evening. The battlefield will be illuminated with 23,746 lights, one for each soldier killed, wounded, or missing in the battle. The tour route to view the illumination will open at dusk and close at 10 p.m. Those who want to attend should enter at the main Shiloh Battlefield entrance and drive toward the visitor center. Rangers will greet visitors on the roadway and provide directions of the tour route.
During the weekend, visitors are also invited to meet sailors from the U.S. Navy Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh, currently stationed in the Sea of Japan. These sailors will be on-hand to present information about the ship and to participate in the events.
