The National Park Service is proposing wetlands restoration projects at four units in the East: Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Monocacy National Battlefield,and Catoctin Mountain Park/NPS

The National Park Service is seeking public comment on its plan to restore wetland areas at Catoctin Mountain Park in Maryland, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Maryland, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia, and Monocacy National Battlefield in Maryland.

The Wetland Restoration Action Plan and Environmental Assessment lays out a comprehensive approach to restoring, enhancing and protecting wetlands, waterways and stream habitats that are key components of the natural environments and historic settings protected in the four parks. The plan would prioritize specific areas within parks in need of restoration and provide specific actions to restore these.

For example, a stream at Catoctin Mountain Park has been identified for a potential project to restore the passage of fish through the stream. Eroded streambanks at C&O Canal and Harpers Ferry national historical parks could be stabilized, and a wetland at Monocacy National Battlefield that has been impacted by farming could be improved.

The NPS is accepting comments through May 12, 2017.
