Winds Near 100 MPH Pound Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Winds gusting to near 100 mph swept Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee on Thursday downed trees in many areas of the park and forced the closure of some facilities. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The windstorm led to closure of the Sugarlands Visitor Center, Oconaluftee Visitor Center, and Cades Cove area, along with the following roads:

  • Newfound Gap Road
  • Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
  • Cherokee Orchard Road
  • Clingmans Dome Road
  • Little River Road 
  • Cades Cove Loop Road
  • Laurel Creek Road
  • Rich Mountain Road 
  • Greenbrier Entrance Road
  • Cherokee Orchard Road
  • Gatlinburg Bypass
  • Foothills Parkway West
  • Foothills Parkway East
  • Cosby Entrance Road
