A teenager from Thailand who had tried to help another swimmer at Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina drowned in the effort. His body was recovered Wednesday morning, according to seashore officials.

A park release said that the body of the 17-year-old was spotted just before 5:30 a.m. on the beach just east of off-road vehicle ramp 48 in Frisco, North Carolina. The body was identified as the teen who was reported missing Tuesday after his boogie board was found washed up on shore near off-road vehicle ramp 49 in Frisco.

The teen reportedly had been trying to assist another swimmer in distress. The swimmer in distress made it back to shore safely, according to park officials.

Throughout Tuesday afternoon and into the night the U.S. Coast Guard, Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, Dare County Sheriff's Office, and National Park Service conducted search efforts for the teen with helicopters, boats, jet skis, and on land.
