A good day fishing on Namakan Lake in Voyageurs National Park ... can get you cited for too many fish!
That's what happened to a Ray, Minnesota, man who was out on the lake with three friends the other day. When rangers contacted the anglers, they discovered 24 walleye in the boat. Minnesota state fishing regulations place a limit on just four walleye per day. All walleye from 17"-28" must be immediately released, and only one over 28" can be kept.
Rangers cited the boat owner/operator for violating those limits. They also seized the fish and donated them to the International Falls, Minnesota, Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
When over-limits of fish are taken, fish populations can become stressed and vulnerable to collapse, hampering the ability of fisheries managers to maintain healthy fish populations, park staff said in a release. Harvest limits are set by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to maintain harvest within sustainable yields.
Voyageurs National Park encourages people to contact the park at 218-283-6600 or Minnesota Department of Natural Resources at 1-800-652-9093 if they observe any suspicious or illegal behavior in the park.
