A rally at Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco that some feared would turn ugly was canceled by the permit holder.
National Park Service staff said Joey Gibson, who obtained the permit for a "Patriot Prayer" rally at Crissy Field, returned the First Amendment permit on Friday.
As a result, the Park Service lifted closures planned for Saturday. However, park-operated visitor facilities, including the Presidio Visitor Center and Fort Point National Historic Site, were to remain closed.
”Crissy Field will be open for public use on Saturday,” Cicely Muldoon, acting general superintendent of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, said Friday evening. “We thank the community for your patience over the last week and your continued support of the Presidio.”
The National Park Service and United States Park Police had worked with regional law enforcement agencies to develop a robust plan for public safety before, during, and after the planned Crissy Field event. "We now stand ready to support the San Francisco Police Department if needed," she said.
U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, citing the violence that broke out earlier this month in Charlottesville, Virginia, between white supremacists and their opponents, had asked the Park Service to deny a permit for the Patriot Prayer event, saying she was "deeply alarmed by the hateful and dangerous nature of the event, its timing so soon after the horrors in Charlottesville, and the serious questions over whether the National Park Service is at all equipped to ensure public safety during a white supremacist rally. The NPS should reevaluate its decision and its capacity to protect the public during such a toxic rally."
